The Basement is a campus-wide resource that all university students – regardless of college or department affiliation can access. Any student with an idea for a business or product concept can apply to join The Basement. Students accepted to the program are provided space and mentorship to develop their business and product concepts. The Basement also hosts open workshops and programs accessible to all students and the community.
As of the Spring 2017 quarter, The Basement Incubator program is Co-Curricular Record Approved for UC San Diego students! Students who complete the program receive recognition for completion on their Co-Curricular Record. The Co-Curricular Record produces an official record printed with student transcripts which highlights student experiences and skills developed beyond the classroom. Students can use their CCR in resumes and cover letters to demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills and experiences following completion of the program.

Gloria directs strategic initiatives to advance opportunities and departmental goals. She worked with The Basement's Alumni Founders and the UC San Diego Alumni office to drive establishment of The Basement in 2015. Gloria’s background in higher education spans many years working in directing programs, program development, project management, corporate relations, fundraising and advising. Gloria has led business and entrepreneurial related programming for seven years within institutions for higher education. She has a strong background in working with startups, business and entrepreneurial programming. Gloria is an experienced publicist and freelance writer with expertise in higher education, publishing, nonprofits and startups. In a former life, she taught university-level research writing, communications and comparative world literature. She is a published writer of literary fiction and poetry. Gloria earned a graduate degree from San Diego State University.
Dr. Mah is a premier advocate for empowering womenowned businesses on a global level by promoting, nurturing, and investing in socially relevant new ventures that allow women to excel around the world. Through her work, Dr. Mah has identified challenges unique to female entrepreneurs. She holds a Ph.D. in Marine Molecular Biology from UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography, an M.B.A. from UC San Diego Rady School of Management, and a B.S. in Biology with Honors from Pepperdine University. She is currently CEO of Hera Labs and a Founding Partner of Hera Fund. Dr. Mah is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and currently resides in San Diego with her husband and three kids. Family is most important to Dr. Mah, and she advocates for a healthy integration of work and life.
Christine Liou is proud alum of UC San Diego Sixth College with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. Prior to starting her role as the Basement Coordinator, she began her UC San Diego career in residential life, transitioned to transfer housing, and most recently advised undergraduate students at the Division of Biological Sciences. While working full-time at UC San Diego, Christine also received her master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership from the University of San Diego.
Rebecca has experience in marketing, sales and consumer engagement during product launches. She attended UC San Diego for her B.S. in Economics and she also minored in Entrepreneurship.
Alice is currently attending UC San Diego and will earn a B.S. in Cognitive Science with a Design and Interaction Specialization and B.A. in International Business in 2020.
