Join The Basement in welcoming seasoned tech patent expert and UC San Diego alum Erik Vieira '97! Erik has 16 years of experience in technical patents and is an avid supporter of student startups. This one of two workshop offerings, which will focus on the following:

  1. What can be patented
  2. What is an invention
  3. Who is an inventor
  4. Why and when to file a patent application
  5. Patent process from start to finish

About the Speaker:

Erik Vieira is Patent Counsel and Owner at Vieira and Associates, which offers patent portfolio and prototyping services based in La Jolla. Mr. Vieira has a Physics B.S. from the University of California at San Diego and worked as an Electrical Engineer for many years designing satellite communication systems before going to law school and has been drafting patent applications for 16 years in a wide variety of advanced technologies, including computing devices, software, wireless, nanotechnology, and energy storage. Mr. Vieira also supports many student startup companies, both domestic and internationally, to procure a key business asset of a patent.

From virtual reality software to 3D printed rocket parts, last year 16 innovative student teams demoed innovative product concepts at Triton Entrepreneur Night. 

The top five teams pitched their business ideas and netted a combined $47,000 in cash and non-cash prizes, and one team took home an Audience Choice Award.

Join us for even bigger exhibits and live demonstrations, team pitches and networking with entrepreneurial-minded alumni, many of whom had started, or backed, startup companies.
